Analysis of the match between Liverpool and Southampton
Southampton endured a nightmare 2024/25 campaign, finishing rock bottom of the Premier League with just 12 points from 38 matchesโten behind Ipswich in 19th place. They were relegated with seven rounds to spare, setting an unwanted record as the worst team in Premier League history. The disastrous run also cost head coach Ivan Juric his job, with Will Still stepping in. However, the managerial change has done little to improve their fortunes, as the Saints have managed only one win in their last six matches, most recently suffering a 1-3 defeat away to Hull City.
Liverpool, by contrast, continue to showcase the strength of reigning Premier League champions. Last weekend, they eased past city rivals Everton 2-1, extending their winning streak to six and remaining unbeaten in nine straight games (eight wins, one draw). Notably, the Reds defeated Southampton three times last season across the Premier League and the League Cup. Having gone unbeaten in their last nine meetings with the Saints (eight wins, one draw), Liverpool are expected to secure another positive result without needing to push themselves to the limit.
