Analysis of the match between Man City and Tottenham
Manchester City began the new season in style, thrashing Wolves 4-0 away from home. It was the biggest win of the Premier Leagueโs opening round, something few had expected after Cityโs inconsistent form last season.
Pep Guardiola found plenty of positives from that victory, most notably the stunning debut of Tijjani Reijnders. The Dutch midfielder scored once and provided an assist, thriving in an advanced No.10 role despite usually playing deeper at Milan. Nearly every City attack flowed through him. Another newcomer, Rayan Cherki, also got on the scoresheet, while Haaland delivered his usual brilliance. With key players like Rodri, Savinho, and Kovacic sidelined, the seamless adaptation of their new signings is giving City a much-needed boost.
This weekend, however, the challenge is far tougher. Tottenham arrive with confidence after a commanding 3-0 win over Burnley, inspired by Richarlisonโs performance. With Son departing and Maddison injured, the Brazilian has quickly stepped up as Spursโ main attacking threat.
More importantly, Tottenham remain one of Cityโs trickiest opponents. Guardiolaโs sides have often struggled against teams who thrive on counterattacking football โ something Spurs excel at. In fact, across the last 12 league meetings, Tottenham have claimed six wins compared to Cityโs four. Adding to that, Spursโ current manager Thomas Frank, during his Brentford days, repeatedly caused problems for Guardiolaโs men.
All signs point to a difficult test for City, and another routine victory is anything but guaranteed.
