Analysis of the match between RW Essen and Dortmund
Rot-Weiss Essen had a productive pre-season in the summer of 2025, winning 6 of their 7 friendly matches. However, that strong form hasn't quite translated into competitive success, as they’ve opened their new campaign with back-to-back 1-1 draws.
As a club currently competing in Germany’s third division, Rot-Weiss Essen are clearly a few levels below Borussia Dortmund — one of the Bundesliga’s top sides. The gulf in class is evident, and a clear example can be seen from last season’s DFB-Pokal, when Essen were dismantled 1-4 by RB Leipzig in the very first round.
Now facing Dortmund, Essen are up against a team not only vastly superior on paper, but also in excellent form. Historically, things don’t look much better for Essen either — they’ve lost 4 of their last 5 meetings with Dortmund.
Given the difference in quality, form, and history, it would be no surprise if Dortmund cruise to a comfortable win, potentially with plenty of goals on display.
