Analysis of the match between RW Essen and Dortmund
Rot-Weiss Essen had a productive pre-season in the summer of 2025, winning 6 of their 7 friendly matches. However, that strong form hasn't quite translated into competitive success, as theyโve opened their new campaign with back-to-back 1-1 draws.
As a club currently competing in Germanyโs third division, Rot-Weiss Essen are clearly a few levels below Borussia Dortmund โ one of the Bundesligaโs top sides. The gulf in class is evident, and a clear example can be seen from last seasonโs DFB-Pokal, when Essen were dismantled 1-4 by RB Leipzig in the very first round.
Now facing Dortmund, Essen are up against a team not only vastly superior on paper, but also in excellent form. The Black and Yellows have won 11 of their last 14 matches and are expected to rotate but still field a strong enough lineup to dominate. Historically, things donโt look much better for Essen either โ theyโve lost 4 of their last 5 meetings with Dortmund.
Given the difference in quality, form, and history, it would be no surprise if Dortmund cruise to a comfortable win, potentially with plenty of goals on display.
